Riding the Cape Cod Rail Trail is one of the best things to do in Harwich, MA

Harwich: the Best Cape Cod Town

When it comes to choosing where to stay in Cape Cod, we urge you to consider getting off the beaten path for the most authentic experience. While Harwich might fly under the radar compared to Provincetown or Hyannis, that’s exactly what makes it one of the best Cape Cod towns to explore. It’s low-key in the best way, with plenty to do but none of the overwhelming crowds.

Start your day with a ride along the Cape Cod Rail Trail, which passes right through Harwich and stretches for 25 scenic miles. The trail can be accessed just minutes from our Bed and breakfast, and we have bikes for you to borrow. As you make your way, you’ll pass through shady forests, cranberry bogs, and charming town centers—giving you plenty of opportunities to stop for iced coffee (or ice cream) and a lobster roll along the way.

If you’re into sun and sand, you’re in luck. Harwich is home to a handful of beautiful beaches with soft sand and warm Nantucket Sound waters, perfect for a summer swim or a lazy afternoon. Red River Beach is one of the best beaches on Cape Cod and is just down the road from us. If you’re looking for something a bit more hidden, try Inman Road Beach, right at the end of our street, or Earl Road Beach. It’s walkable from the Inn and features soft sand, calm waters, and convenient access to nearby amenities. Beyond relaxing days at the beach, here’s a curated list of why Harwich should top your list of where to stay in Cape Cod:

  1. For a bit of coastal charm, stroll the harbors in Harwich Port. You’ll find a number of boutiques and galleries along Harwich Port Main Street, where you’ll experience the town’s vibrant atmosphere.
  2. During July and August, don’t miss the Harwich Port Nights, featuring live outdoor music and a festive atmosphere.
  3. Another of our favorite things to do in Harwich, MA, is Kayaking on the Herring River. The waters are calm and wide and the perfect way to soak up the Cape’s summer rays.
  4. Attend a summer baseball game with the Cape Cod Baseball League, one of the premier summer leagues in the country. It’s small-town Americana at its best.
  5. Don’t skip the chance to catch a live show at the Harwich Junior Theatre—one of the oldest community theaters in the country.
  6. For a fragrant day of beauty, we recommend visiting the Cape Cod Lavender Farm. Peak bloom is in July, and the farm is surrounded by 75 acres of conservation land with woodland trails for quiet afternoon strolls. It’s one of our favorite things to do in Harwich!
  7. There are plenty of other great walking trails in Harwich, including Bell’s Neck Conservation Lands. Spanning over 250 acres, the area features trails that meander through salt marshes and alongside the Herring River. Birdwatchers will also appreciate the diverse avian population, including ospreys and herons.
  8. What’s a Cape Cod getaway without plenty of fresh seafood and fantastic eats? From elevated fine dining to excellent seafood shacks, you’ll like the variety of restaurants in Harwich.
  9. Avoid the crowds and take a direct ferry from Harwich Port to Nantucket. The Freedom Ferry offers a scenic 1 hour and 20-minute ride to the island, with the convenience of free parking at the terminal. It’s a hassle-free way to explore Nantucket’s charm during your Cape Cod summer getaway.

Whether you’re a foodie, beachgoer, or casual explorer, Harwich is the perfect answer to the “Where to stay in Cape Cod?” question. Our port town offers a little bit of everything that makes a Cape Cod summer special—without having to venture far or fight for parking. And when the sun starts to set, you’ll be glad you booked one of the most relaxing and stylish Cape Cod places to stay right in the heart of it all. Book your stay today!
