Eco + Social Initiatives

We live on Cape Cod because we love nature… the ocean, the land, the wildlife. We strive to create a beautiful environment that not only respects nature, but helps to foster a positive impact on the environment and our community. Our initiatives include:

Embracing Nature

  • Raising honey bees – an essential component to our food chain, and they provide the most delicious honey.
  • Raising chickens. Provides a healthy egg source for our breakfasts, and they consume some of the food ‘waste’ as we prepare meals. Reduces our impact on landfills & provides nutrients for our gardens.
  • Composting and Bokashi composting. Both reduce our impact on the landfills as well as providing natural nutrients for our gardens.
  • Pollinator Pathway. We are part of the pollinator pathway – a connection of individual households and businesses that incorporate native plants and those beneficial to our pollinator friends – the bees, hummingbirds, butterflies and more.
  • We use natural products to treat the property against ticks and mosquitos, as well as natural fertilizers. Pesticides and chemical treatments would have a negative impact on our bees, chickens, vegetable gardens, and the environment in general.
  • Majority of our cleaning products are natural based and chemical free.
  • We are replacing our traditional grass lawn with clover – good for the bees and improves soil water retention.

Water Use

  • Whole house water filtration system – eliminating the need for disposable plastic water bottles, and providing delicious water for drinking… and bathing!
  • We provide our guests with re-usable water bottles for their travels around Cape Cod which they may take home with them.
  • Rain barrels collect water to be used to water non-edible plants, thus reducing our water consumption.
  • We encourage guests to reuse towels to reduce water use.

Waste Reduction

  • Recycling. We actively participate in recycling waste from the business and from our guests.
  • We use rechargeable batteries & LED lighting wherever possible.
  • We use energy saving appliances.
  • We have eliminated the single use toiletry products which reduces waste and our impact on landfills. Our BeeKind bath products also support honey bee and sustainable pollination research at the University of California at Davis Entomology Department by donating a portion of the proceeds from sales to the University’s “Honey Bee Research Program.

Giving Back

  • We donate gift certificates to fund raisers raising money for the local Food Pantry & other charitable organizations such as GBH and WCNY.
  • We donate personal and business items to the local Food Pantry of Cape Cod, where the proceeds benefit the Local Food Pantry in Harwich, as well as the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center.
  • Our Platinum Pebble logo patches are made from recycled material, and $3 from the sale of each is donated to the Harwich Conservation Trust to preserve open space. We also personally donate to this organization.
  • Each time a dog stays with us, $25 of the pet fee is donated to the Animal Rescue League in Brewster or Dogs for Better Lives.
  • We donate used towels and bedding to the Animal Rescue League in Brewster.
  • We volunteer in the annual spring herring count sponsored by the Association to Preserve Cape Cod. Herring are a vital component of the ocean’s food chain. We have also volunteered in their trail grooming program.
  • To honor our Veterans, through organizations such as B&Bs for Vets, we provide a complementary night stay at the Inn for Veterans Day. The past few years we donated up to 16 nights each year filling the inn with Veterans! We also extend a 10% discount to Veterans, Active Duty Military, Fire & Police year round.
